Will there at least be a read-only archive somewhere? The recent internet landscape of information and website history no longer being easily accessible via public forum and any information being locked behind things like Discord servers worries me, especially in regard to preservation of the old internet. If it's closing to new posts for easier moderation that's fine, but it would still suck if everything were completely deleted without leaving a backup archive that can still be found.
I have to say I agree. Most active communities even now maintain a forum, in some shape or other. This feels uncomfortably like putting all one's eggs in a single basket, especially considering how many times the site has gone down for extensive periods over the years. And while Discord may be agreeable to it now, I don't recommend trusting them on the long term. As has been adequately pointed out, it's more difficult as well to archive and preserve a Discord server if Discord end up deciding that they suddenly aren't cool with certain communities or content. I wouldn't mention it if I hadn't had that exact experience more times than I can count in my career as a mature-oriented artist and creator. Just something to keep in mind.

Hi there!
I posted a reply to the comment you initially replied to, but I figured I'd address a couple things here as well ^-^

I definitely agree with the sentiment of not putting everything in one basket. Unfortunately though when it comes to hosting, that's something you just gotta do sometimes unless you want disparity between hosting environments, locations, etc.
We already put up with this a bit with the current setup as Y!g is hosted through one company, and the forum through another. If one of the companies were to wipe out their respective content hosted though, the other likely would as well as they have very similar ToS and policies.

That being said, we've looked into self-hosted Discord alternatives and have found a pretty compelling alternative. It's an open source server-client software called Revolt. We may spin up an instance in the future as an alternative to the Discord where we'll be safe from Discord's ToS, but at the moment it's just a thought.

That being said, as the lead dev now, I try my best to keep the site up, and thankfully haven't had too many instances where it was down for longer than a day (or half a day if I was asleep)

If there's more I can explain or if there's more you'd like to add, then I'd definitely be interested in hearing what you have to say ^-^

Thanks!

Thank you so much for taking the time to reply. I feel much better knowing you have other options, just in case, and you absolutely have kept the site from being down for very long any time it's had problems lately.

I don't think some necessary disparity is necessarily a bad thing; even a low-cost or free option is better than nothing. But of course, as you've pointed out, that will require someone to monitor it, especially as spam and bots are an absolute scourge of the modern internet landscape. When there's a limited staff, there are limited options. That's just reality, and I understand.

I am glad that the site is in overall more capable hands now than we've seen in the past. Your work as lead developer has taken the site to a much better place than it was before, so hopefully that will continue steadily on from now.

Of course!
Acknowledging things or issues, explaining and talking about them is important, so I wanted to make sure my intentions were clear and whatnot ^-^
Now that I'm thinking about tot, we could probably save a backup of the forum as a tar/zip file and post that somewhere for archival sake. The forum wouldn't still be up or anything, but if someone really wanted to, they could restore or explore the contents of that backup

Transparency and openness with a community are two extremely precious things, and it's much appreciated. I know it's not really fair to bring up things that happened before the current people were where they are, but this is unfortunately a community that has seen a great deal of oppression from all sides, and some repeated unpleasantness from within as well. A lot of people, I'm sure, are like kicked puppies -- they don't even communicate as much anymore, they're so skittish about an environment that they might feel they can't let down their defenses in. Being open and up-front really helps set people's minds at ease, and it's something that fosters trust, so I'm all for it.

A backup of the forum would surely be a good thing. I know it sounds a bit dramatic, but this is a pretty important thing in terms of archiving. It's a piece of history, and it's especially important for subcultures and cultures that are not the mainstream to preserve their history, because the mainstream society and culture will not prioritize it. We have to keep our own history, because we're the only ones who are willing and able.
