Artist's comment:
Sigh. The older I get, the less fun I am to be around. Which is only natural, I guess, but still concerning, given that I wasn't that much fun to be around even in my heyday. :meh:

Anyway, Wizards of the Coast has released a couple of new secret lair cards based off the 80s D&D cartoon. So it was kinda inevitable that my free doodling today featured those characters... I started thinking about Bobby the Barbarian's design. Lots of fun, and quite classic in a mindless-replication-of-fantasy-tropes way...but what would a realistic version of that design look like? Can you even speak of realism in the context of a fantasy setting? Short answer: no, but longer answer...well, I guess the highest authority regarding the Barbarian stereotype specifically could not be granted to anyone else but Robert E. Howard, creator of Conan. And while his Hyborian Age is fictional, and set at least 10000 years BCE, he did not really intend to create fictional history from scratch - he just wanted a setting that allowed him to play with the historical epoch he was most interested in without the pesky need for research and accuracy. :XD:

And technologically, the world of the Hyborian Age is obviously at the seam between the bronze age and the iron age, hence the secret of steel. So bronze age technology and culture would be the mark of barbarism from the viewpoint of the more 'advanced' cultures of the age...
...well, and back in the real world at the same general point in history, the mark of barbarism, from the viewpoint of basically any culture towards any other one, was defined even simpler: not speaking our language. :XD:

Well, so here's Bobby, the real Barbarian: just a generic bronze age warrior. Which still makes him more cultured than the average fantasy Barbarian, of course, since those tend to be neolithic in anything but weaponry.

Having made a no-fun version of Bobby, I thought I should extend that losing streak by making a no-fun version of Eric next. There's enough that's technically implausible or just plainly technologically incoherent in his canon design to give ample leeway for the injection of some realism, after all.

So here he is being no longer any fun, either. Great, I managed to get myself all depressed again...:meh:

They look like they are sad and yet also look like they have crushes on each other.

I know nothing about history so I’d go by dungeons and dragons/modern friendly canon... With certain shows like Naruto and Digimon I make modern AUs for them.

Digimon has a modern series but friends who are sub stans are saying it’s all fights and no boys being gay… Meanwhile I joined the Pokémon fandom and I ship Ash and Gou.

Two boys have romantic feelings for each other but are too afraid to act on them is my crack I yell “oh just make out already!” I’ll stop looking at you when you make out anime OTP for *insert show here*

I feel your pain, my mental health isn’t the best it could be I just want to be able to do the things I used to… I’m also a year older and have finished my birthday cake.

But we shouldn’t feel like we are less fun to be around, I feel that way too and that just worsens my depression. Your still a great friend of mine who makes incredible art and I’m a sadder version of my usual happy and perky self.

Seeing your art cheered me up!

Thanks a lot, happy to hear that my art cheered you up, even when I wasn't in a cheerful mood as I drew it. And for a while after that - but right now I feel better, and a bit more stable for the time being. If not terribly much more fun to be around, but I'll take it from here...

Sorry to hear that you've also struggled with depression - I feel with you, so to speak.

(And Happy Birthday - belatedly....)
